Our Work

Through rigorous research, analysis, education, and capacity building initiatives, RMI India Foundation aims to accelerate the adoption of market-based solutions that cost-effectively bring a shift to efficiency and renewable energy.

How we work

Research and Technical Analysis

RMI India Foundation conducts research and technical analysis to inform policy at the national and subnational levels in India. Collaborative and rigorous analysis is aimed towards building commitment and confidence among key stakeholders by quantifying the potential environmental and economic impacts of clean energy pathways.

Programme Implementation

RMI India Foundation’s programme implementation goal is to facilitate effective early-stage pilots, in collaboration with key stakeholders, from industry to government. The pilots (and their successes and challenges) will inform policy recommendations, creating a learning cycle that helps refine policies for long-term impact.

Education and Capacity Building

RMI India Foundation’s work in education and capacity building is aimed at a range of audiences including governments, students, and peers through delivery of lectures and expert talks, and participation in conferences, panel discussions, and roundtables.

Areas of Work

In 2021, the Government of India announced bold targets to become a net-zero emissions economy by 2070, and to generate 50 percent of its energy from renewable resources by 2030. India has already been witnessing a rapid uptake of renewable energy and other clean energy measures. Working towards the government’s targets could lead to one of the most transformative integrated clean energy transformations the world has seen, especially at a time when the demand for mobility and electricity is increasing.

RMI India Foundation aims to work to support the realisation of these goals set by the Government of India, through working on issues such as energy efficiency, demand reduction, grid flexibility, electric vehicles, green hydrogen, and others.

Current initiatives

Towards a Sustainable Electricity Distribution Sector – A Review of DISCOM Performance Statistics

In order to support an effective and sustainable transformation of India’s electricity sector, financially viable electricity distribution companies (DISCOMs) are essential. The intersection of renewable energy, energy storage, electric mobility, and demand flexibility presents an emerging opportunity for India’s DISCOMs to integrate portfolios of clean energy technologies.

To demonstrate the value of integrated clean energy portfolios at the state level in India, this report aims to provide insights on operational improvements needed in DISCOMs and the unique characteristics of different states—including demand side management and resilience characteristics—that can inform decisionmakers to plan for ways forward.

RMI India Foundation Annual Fellowship Programme

The annual fellowship programme, targeted at early career professionals, is for a period of 12 months. Selected fellows work as integral members of RMI Energy Solutions India Foundation and will have the opportunity to gain market and policy experience while working as part of a motivated, and mission-driven team.
